Kim Kardashian is a Marketing Genius
Once in Year 12 in my Society & Culture class, we were speaking about pop culture at the end of class. I stood up and proclaimed ‘Kim Kardashian is a marketing genius’. I then made my case for why Kim is a genius. I’m not sure if I convinced anyone apart from my teacher, but I stand firm with my opinion today.
Kim Kardashian Westturned 40 last week. Married to one of the most successful men in the world, a huge family, and a ton of money. So many people credit her success to Kris Jenner, and fair enough — however, let’s talk about the success of what Kim has done.
A human brand with heels walking around the planet. Ask anyone if they know who Kim Kardashian is, and I guarantee you it will be hard to find one person who doesn’t know her. Her name is a brand, because it is that well known. She has an insane business track record, owning multiple successful businesses including television shows, clothing stores, endorsement deals, cosmetic lines, and apps. Kim has even released her own successful selfie book. That’s right, a book filled with Selfies of her. If that isn’t genius and impressive, then I don’t know what is.
Everything Kim does is documented, scripted, and controlled. Carefully articulating every move ahead and ensuring the maximum success from it. Now of course Kim has a HUGE team behind her, whether that's on her shows or running her social media, but despite this, there is so much Kim in successfully marketing herself.
Still not convinced? I am doing a Commerce degree with a Marketing major at University, and as such I would love to relate it to some marketing content, highlighting some strengths.
She excels in understanding her target audience
Kim knows exactly who buys her products, comments on her photos, gets involved with the Kardashian life, and Kim delivers. She gives her target audience what they want to see- money, fame, all in the form of carefully constructed tweets of her holidays, her families, behind the scenes of photoshoots and selfies in her bathing suits. It’s genius.
She ensures she is always relevant and consistent
Kim in all her public appearances and social media posts delivers relevant and consistent posts to all her fans, and despite hitting her 40’s last week, remains as powerful, sexy and relevant as ever. Nowadays when not flaunting her assets, she instead posts family photos that grab the attention of the viewer (see Flintstones Halloween family customes below).
She is relatable
Okay, so maybe we all aren’t rich like Kim, but sex well and truly sells. Sex sells and Kim knows it. In 2014, Kim ‘broke the internet’ — how? — simply by getting nude on the cover of Paper Magazine. Kim Kardashian’s not-so-private assets have continued to bring attention to her brand because her content was relevant and relatable. She, after all, started off because of a leaked sex tape.
Very random blog, but a blog I’ve wanted to write about since starting my degree as it is very relevant to my studies.
Thanks for reading. Happy 40th Kim!
